A simple roof against rain and wind using a tarp and some cord.
Safety first
Do not camp under dead branches or in low ground where water collects. In storms with lightning, a tarp is not safe shelter - go to a building or a hard-topped car.
You will need
A tarp (about 8 × 10 ft or larger)
About 30 ft of cord
4-6 stakes or sturdy sticks
1. Choose a safe spot
Find two trees about 10-12 feet apart on level, slightly raised ground. Look up and avoid dead branches.
2. Tie a ridgeline
Tie cord tightly between the trees at about chest height. Lower is warmer; higher gives more room.
3. Drape the tarp
Hang the tarp over the line so both sides are even.
4. Stake it out
Pull each corner out and down at an angle and stake it so the tarp is tight and rain runs off.
